As the Florida labor market struggles through the longest economic downturn since the Great Depression, business is booming in one place.
The state Agency for Workforce Innovation, which administers Florida's unemployment program, is looking to hire about 150 people in the next few months to accommodate the additional demand placed on the agency.
The temporary positions will be based primarily in Tallahassee and Fort Lauderdale. Workers will be hired to process unemployment claims, determine applicant eligibility and handle appeals from those denied benefits.
Pay range is from $12.51 to $19.27 an hour, according the agency. Florida's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
Tuesday, agency officials were expected to ask the Florida Legislature for authority to use about $8.6 million in federal money to hire the workers. It comes from a grant approved near the end of the 2009 legislative session.
As unemployment in Florida has grown – it now stands at 10.7 percent with new numbers due Friday – the state has struggled to provide timely service to the state's jobless.
Clients complain regularly that the agency's phone system is constantly busy, swamped with callers looking for information about their claims. Many say they spend hours each day trying crack the system.
The state has sought to handle the crush by adding about 400 employees and 345 new phone lines since early 2007. Because the administrative costs of the program are federally funded, it has not been affected by the state budget crunch.
People interested can apply through Employ Florida Marketplace at www.employflorida.com or by visiting the one-stop career centers in Fort Lauderdale or Tallahassee.
