Creating jobs by cutting taxes is GOP plan for Fla. legislative session Empty Volusia County Residents head to Florida Capitol for Jobs help

Post  daytonaman Wed Mar 24, 2010 9:32 am

DAYTONA BEACH -- Volusia County residents are making the trek to Tallahassee today for the 10th annual Volusia Day.

Lawmakers will meet with about 200 people from Volusia County who have made the trip to the state capital.

This year's trip is about getting to work at finding work. It's a message Volusia County is not alone in pushing:
create more jobs, more high-tech, higher paying jobs.

The Volusia County group began the trek at the Daytona International Speedway. Members of the group say they're in a race to stop the job losses in this region.

Volusia and Flagler counties are near the top in the state in unemployment.

But the folks on this trip aren't just pushing for help here in this county.

They've got their eyes looking south too, to Brevard County...for good reason.

"One of the major issues we have a major concern with is the space port," said Jim Cameron of the Daytona Beach chamber of commerce. "We have a number of people in Volusia County who work down there at the Kennedy Space Center and we're not too sure what the outcome is gonna be for the future of space flight down there."

One bill many in this group supports is working its way through the senate, the Jobs for Florida Bill.

The Senate version has a $187 million price tag, but would give tax breaks to space-related jobs as well as high-tech and film industries.

Creating jobs by cutting taxes is GOP plan for Fla. legislative session Empty Brevard Space Jobs

Post  sc4ram Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:23 am

The latter part of this article is going to be a real problem in Brevard County. When the Prez (then Sen) was campaigning in North Brevard in 2008, he told a big campaign rally that he was going to support manned Spaceflight @ the Cape. (Well received words given the backdrop of the Shuttle program ending soon) .

Once he took office, the Administratoin conveniently decided to cancle the next 2 launch vehicles being developed and essentially shelve any plans to return to the moon. (In lieu of subcontracting Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions to the Space station to private contractors.)[To be fair the LEO idea probably isnt a bad idea on paper for the tax payer, except it will look awkward that in the interem, as US astronuts will have to hitch a ride to the Space Station on Russian rockets)

The aforemention audiance in 2008 are the people that are going to get screwed . The estimates are that 7000-9000 direct jobs will be lost with the end of the Shuttle program (and no replacement budgeted for) . The killer is many of these are high skilled high paying jobs with benefits. Addiing indirect job loss (retail, resturants, hotels etc) as a result is estimated to impact up to 20,000 jobs .

This will be terrible not only for the employees affected but for the tax base of the County . This will be worse than the real estate crash for Brevard (and parts of South Volusia) . Hopefully by the time Congress gets through punching holes in the President's Space plan, they will have made the impact less severe.

Obama is a Marxist liar, Florida's Brevard & Volusia counties are going to see a huge jump in the unemployment rate and homelessness when the space program is scrapped, Our Government needs to WAKE UP and face reality!

Creating jobs by cutting taxes is GOP plan for Fla. legislative session Empty Democratic members of the House subcommittee not as hostile to Obama’s NASA plan

Interesting that no Florida politicians are mentioned here. It looks so far like Rep Kosmas and Sen Nelson didnt get a reprieve for the Cape in exchange for their health care votes. We'll see what the Prez says when he comes to Brevard for the "Space Summit" next month. I would suggest that he bring some extra batteries for his teleprompter.

Creating jobs by cutting taxes is GOP plan for Fla. legislative session Empty Marion County

Post  Sheila Wed Mar 24, 2010 2:52 pm

Marion County is the second highest unemployment with a rate of 15.4%, (It is really higher)....Over 20,000 on unemployment and 200 people for every job applicant. We are a large county and yet are never mentioned. The foreclosures are EVERYWHERE. We even made national news by being the county that lost the MOST housing values in the entire United States. It is scary here and the county has absolutely no plans to do anything. I don't know if this new plan will work, but it has to happen fast, real fast.
